Explore Linville Caverns in Linville, NC off the Blue Ridge Parkway

Updated: Aug 27, 2023

This article contains a list of things I wish I knew before I went to Linville Caverns. Hopefully, you'll find these ideas helpful!

The fun thing about moving away from NC and going back to visit is that I get to be a tourist in my home state. All my life, I had never been to Linville Caverns until this summer. It was so much more fun than I had anticipated. I can't wait to go back!

Linville Caverns is accessible via the Blue Ridge Parkway. We hit a few dead zones on our way there and lost cell service. Thankfully, Granny was with us and she knows those roads like the back of her hand.

This brings us to the first item on the list:

1.) If you don't have a mountain granny with you, be sure to pre-download the directions on your Google Maps. You will have peace of mind that you can make the journey there and back again without a hitch.

The second item on the list is:

2.) Bring a rain jacket. Even if it's 100 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny outside, the interior of the caverns will be a chilly 56 degrees F. The rain jacket will keep you warm while shielding you from cave drips. You will get dripped on the entire time you are in the caverns and every single time you will wonder if it's water or guano (bat poop). I will definitely bring my rain jacket next time! Those icy cold drips that hit you dead center on the head and roll through your scalp...no thanks! lol!

Third on the list is:

3.) Bring cash to tip your guide. The Linville Caverns experience would not have been as enjoyable if it wasn't for our amazing guide. He was the perfect combination of helpful, funny, and knowledgeable. At the end of the tour, I realized that I didn't have any cash on me. I really wanted to tip him, but was unable to. Next time I go, I will definitely bring cash for our guide.

Number four on the list:

4.) Look out for bats! The real ones were peacefully minding their own business. It's the fake one on the ceiling that'll give you nightmares! Just kidding! No nightmares, but I did get a nice little jump scare when I saw the fake bat. Even though I knew it wasn't real, I still felt a slight rush of adrenaline. Kinda like walking through one of those haunted houses at Halloween. You're expecting the dude to pop out with a chainsaw and yet you still scream when he does. Not quite that level of fear, but you get what I'm saying, I'm sure!

Thanks for reading along. I hope this list was helpful. If you can think of anything else, please drop a comment below.

Take care and safe travels, my friend!

Carpe Diem,

Melissa Anne
